If you’ve welcomed a Maine Coon into your home, you’re probably already in love with their lion-like ruff, gentle demeanor, and tufted ears. But there’s one question nearly every Maine Coon owner asks:
“How big will my Maine Coon get?”
The short answer? Pretty darn big.
Average Size of a Maine Coon
Maine Coons are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds in the world. According to TICA, males typically weigh between 18-22 pounds, while females are usually a bit smaller, ranging from 12-15 pounds. In terms of length, these cats can stretch up to 40 inches from nose to tail tip, with their long, bushy tails adding to their impressive silhouette.
At Finn Manor, we are overflowing with incredible Maine Coons—and they definitely live up to the breed’s reputation for size (and fluff). While most of them are younger, our two eldest coons have nearly reached mature weight.
Belua, the mom of two of our Spring litter, is nearly three years old and weighs around 16 pounds. She is a black silver tortie with white and a real gem!
Toddy, on the other hand, is our gentle giant. At only two years old, he already weighs 20 pounds and shows no signs of stopping. We expect him to top out at around 22 pounds once he finishes filling out.

Growth Timeline
But wait, how long does it take for Maine Coons to grow? Unlike most cat breeds that mature around the one-year mark, Maine Coons are slow growers. These gentle giants can take 3 to 5 years to reach their full size. So if your one-year-old Maine Coon still looks gangly or a little awkward—don’t worry! They’ve got time.
Here’s a rough guide:
- 0–6 months: Rapid growth stage—kittens may gain up to a pound a month.
- 6–12 months: Growth slows a bit, but they’ll still be steadily filling out.
- 1–3 years: Continued development of muscle and frame.
- 3–5 years: Final “bulk up” phase as they reach full adult size.

Toddy’s size at age two shows just how much growth can still happen in those later years—he’s not done yet!
Factors That Influence Size
A few things can influence how large your Maine Coon will get:
- Genetics: Size often runs in the family. If your cat’s parents were large, there’s a good chance your cat will be too. So a Belua/Toddy baby has a great chance of getting big!
- Diet: A high-protein, well-balanced diet supports steady, healthy growth. Maine Coons are active and muscular, and their food should reflect that.
- Health & Care: Regular vet visits and proactive health screenings, help ensure your cat is on the right growth track.
- Spay/Neuter Timing: While early spay/neuter may slightly influence growth patterns, Maine Coons still tend to grow large regardless. We spray/neuter all our kittens before they go to their forever homes!

Will my Maine Coon Get Bigger than a Regular Cat?
This really depends on the “regular” cat you have! According to Catster, some other cat breeds, such as the Savannah F1 and Norwegian Forest get as tall or taller than Maine Coons on average, but a standard domestic short hair cat rarely gets heavier than 12 pounds or longer than 25 inches. Some Maine Coons could be double the size of a domestic short hair cat!
Should I Worry If My Maine Coon Isn’t Huge?
Not all Maine Coons are destined to be over 20 pounds. While size is a hallmark of the breed, every cat is unique. Belua, for example, isn’t the biggest female Maine Coon out there, but she’s tall, long, healthy, and perfectly within the breed standard.
If you’re ever concerned about your cat’s growth, your vet can help track their development and rule out any health concerns.
In Summary:
Maine Coons grow bigger and slower than your average cat. Most reach full size between 3 and 5 years—so patience is key! Whether your cat ends up a petite 14-pounder or a majestic 22-pound lap lion, they’re bound to be a loving, loyal, and oh-so-fluffy companion.
